Why should you release staff for training?
Investing in non-clinical training is not just about personal development – it directly benefits practices, patients, and the wider system. Well-trained staff improve patient experience, reduce errors, and increase efficiency, ultimately easing pressure on GPs and clinical teams. From the recent Training Needs Analysis, practices told us that the biggest barriers to training are:
- Travel and time constraints
- Limited awareness of opportunities available
- Balancing patient access with protected learning time
- Difficulty releasing staff during busy clinics
- Short staffing and service pressures
We recognise these pressures, but without investment in people, these same challenges will continue to grow. By enabling staff to attend training, practices gain a more confident and skilled workforce. Staff who are better prepared to adapt to change and new models of care, improved morale and retention and greater resilience, ensuring sustainable patient access. Supporting training is therefore not a cost to practices – it’s a long-term saving and a patient care investment. Releasing staff, even for short protected periods, ensures your practice remains future-ready, efficient, and a place where people want to work.
NHSE has confirmed that funding will continue for nursing associates, nurses, and allied health professionals in 2025/26. Each eligible staff member is allocated £333 to be used by March 2026. Check the Training Hub Calendar for available courses and book early to secure your place. If you need to update eligible staff details or have any queries, please contact cw.traininghub@nhs.net.
