Medical Education Team
PLT – Learning Disabilities
Last month, the Medical Education team delivered a PLT on Learning Disabilities to over 1500 people across Coventry and Warwickshire. This session featured multiple guest speakers and Experts by Experience (EBEs), sharing their thoughts on how we can make General Practice more accessible for those with learning disabilities.
This session was delivered in partnership with Grapevine and with funding from the ICB.
Although this programme has been tailored to meet the CQC primary care requirements, this course is not endorsed by NHSE and in the future the formal training of OMMT may be made compulsory, in which case all staff would have to attend.
Our next sessions, on Autism, will take place in November this year. Please keep an eye on our website for more information about these sessions.
For details on Lunch & Learn sessions, PLT recordings and more – take a look at our dedicated Medical Education page.

Health and Wellbeing
Feel confident in supporting your staff with their wellbeing
A member of your team is struggling, they have found the courage to talk to you and share that they are:
- Suffering with depression
- Worried about a family member living in the midst of the middle east crisis
- Struggling to cope following a bereavement
- Overwhelmed, stressed and anxious
- Feeling isolated

Do you feel confident in having an open conversation on these topics?…
Do you know when it’s appropriate to signpost to support and where to signpost to?…
We know that the wellbeing of our colleagues can be affected by all kinds of factors at work – workload, capacity, relationships with colleagues and the physical working environment. Likewise, factors outside of work including lack of sleep, financial worries, health conditions, caring responsibilities and other personal circumstances can also have an impact.
Our aim is to support you to feel confident having open conversations about mental health with your team members, know where to signpost to and where to go for support and guidance for yourself.
The accredited Mental Health Skills for Managers training delivered by MIND will support you with this.
Spaces are available in September, October and November – to register click the button below.
How to deal with trauma on the frontline
Open to anyone working in and supporting General Practice!
Have you ever been impacted by trauma at work? Did you recognise it as trauma at the time?
And would you know how to support a colleague who found themselves in a similar situation?
Understanding more about trauma and knowing what to look out for is really important if we want to better manage the effects of trauma, in ourselves and in our colleagues. There are ways we can learn to cope better with trauma exposure in a healthy way.
This month join Dr Rachel Morris, host of the You Are Not a Frog Podcast and Dr Caroline Walker, Psychiatrist, therapist and founder of The Joyful Doctor at the July Work Well Webinar “How to deal with trauma on the frontline” on Wednesday 3rd July at 7.30pm.
You’ll learn:
- The difference between direct and indirect trauma, and the impact they have
- How to recognise when you, or others, are traumatised at work
- How to manage your own trauma response in a healthy way
P.S. CPD forms are provided by the Shapes toolkit team, so you can claim CPD for attending.

Freedom to Speak Up
Most speaking up happens through conversations with supervisors and line managers where challenges are raised and resolved quickly.
We strive for a culture where that is normal, everyday practice and encourage you to explore this option – it may well be the easiest and simplest way of resolving matters.
Please contact your Freedom to Speak Up Guardian, Dr Mai Elftise, who can support you to speak up if you feel unable to do so by other routes. You can contact her via pcftsu.guardian@nhs.net.
Further information on ‘Speaking Up’ can be found in our Freedom to Speak Up (FTSU) Policy for General Practice

GPA Training Programme
As we come to the end of the first 3-month rotation, the General Practice Assistants (GPA) have been supported through the Training Hub to work through the GPA competency framework. The GPAs also rotate to administrative and care modules over the next 6 months, being supported to complete the 256 core competency areas within their workplace.
With thanks to the CWTH Nursing Team who lead the clinical module.
If you have recently employed a GPA within your practice, please get in touch with the CWTH administration team or GPA Programme Director (emma.lomas6@nhs.net) for further information regarding Training Hub support still available.

MSc – Advanced Clinical Practice
NHS England have confirmed a number of funded placed for the Advanced Clinical Practice (ACP) programmes that NHS England has agreed to support for the 2024/25 financial year across Coventry and Warwickshire.
What commitment is expected of the trainee AP whilst studying?
Trainees are required to attend university teaching days, practise clinical skills in their workplace and complete workplace-based assessments of competencies. They will also need time to meet their supervisor regularly to plan their individual educational needs and monitor their progress.
The requirements of supervisors are explained in more detail in the NHSE ACP Toolkit. It is expected that each trainee will dedicate many hours to independent study to become successful in achieving the qualification. The notional number of hours of study and teaching expected is approximately 100 hours per 10 academic credits (which includes both contact hours and independent study hours) however, the actual time spent may be more, or less, dependent on individual learners.
It is therefore important for AP trainees have sufficient work-based learning time to develop their advanced skills.
What supervision is required?
Good workplace-based supervision is a key factor for successful completion of ACP training. Trainees who are not well supervised can struggle and some have failed to complete their programmes. Each trainee AP requires a named workplace supervisor who can undertake multi-professional supervision and is familiar with the learning requirements of advanced practice. Supervisors must have protected time in their job plan to support the trainee. National guidelines on Advanced Practice supervision were published in 2020 and can be accessed here: National Guidance
The expectation is that AP trainees will have supervision over the course of their training adhering to the principles of the HEE Quality Framework, Multi-Professional Advanced Clinical Practice Framework and Minimum standards for supervision for all learners.
For more information, please see the Advanced Clinical Practice Handbook.
Cancer Care Review – Training in Primary Care – Opportunity to Train
Are you an experienced nursing professional who has or is currently providing cancer care for local patients? Are you passionate about improving the delivery of patient care and confident to deliver wider training?
Cancer Care Reviews (CCR) form part of an important conversation between a patient and a Health or Social Care professional about their experience with cancer, their treatment, and their concerns. These can be done by any member of the Primary Care Team, who have received the appropriate training, but Practice Nurses are well placed to undertake the reviews.
The C&W Training hub is working in partnership with the ICB Cancer Transformation Team and local Acute providers. We are currently looking for individuals who can support us with the delivery of CCR training directly to primary care healthcare professionals working across Coventry and Warwickshire.
The course material is already prepared, following previously run courses online and designed to meet the learning needs of course attendees. We are planning to have staff signed up to a two-day course, commencing in Autumn 2024 (exact dates to be confirmed). The initial commitment would be for 4 days to include planning/preparation and the course itself. You will also be supported by a non-clinical lead. The hope would be to run the course every 6 months depending on demand.
If you would like an informal chat about the role please email hazelblanchard@nhs.net (Primary Care Cancer GP Lead) or alternatively if you have other questions or wish to complete an expression of interest form please email this document to cw.traininghub@nhs.net FAO Mary Brannigan by Monday 15th July 2024.
All sessions will be delivered remotely (Microsoft Teams) over two days with a maximum of 10 delegates per full day session. Staff Reimbursement will be based on Agenda for Change Band 7 hourly rate.

The Midlands Advanced Practice Forum
The Midlands Advanced Practice Forum is a professional community of healthcare practitioners based across the Midlands of the United Kingdom. The forum is dedicated to advancing the practice of healthcare by promoting collaboration, innovation, and excellence among its members.
Membership costs £10 per quarter of £40 for annual subscription which gives access to a host of resources, AP conferences and study days running within the midlands and connect with other Advanced Practice colleagues across the region.
The recent Midlands Advanced Practice Forum Worcester Roadshow on 24th April 2024 was a good event with a range of Advanced Clinical Practitioners mainly from secondary care talking about their clinical roles and how they developed their service. This included presentations from palliative care in how to support patients at risk of skeletal-related events, an NHS England update from Dr Julian Barratt.
There was a lively debate about autonomy within consultations and the afternoon finished with an interesting session on how we can use the research pillar more proactively within practice including ways to access PhD studies. -The next virtual online event is planned for the 14/7/24 and the next roadshow event is planned for 16/10/24 (venue TBC) and it would be great to see more primary care representation so calling for speakers /posters – please contact Sue Thomas (ANP Ambassador) if you are interested at susan.thomas72@nhs.net
