The course is free and delivered entirely online in the form of videos, articles, discussion, and practical exercises. The course is facilitated for one month, during which time participants can complete the course at their own pace and have access to the Culture Transformation Team’s topic experts for guidance and advice.

We Work Flexibly

‘We Work Flexibly’ is one of the core components of the NHS People Promise.

Throughout Autumn, NHS England ran a 10-week flexible working initiative Focus on Flex to signpost organisations and colleagues to resources that can help enhance their approach to flexible working.

Here are a few resources we encourage colleagues to make use of:

1. Line manager guide and Individual guide developed in partnership with Timewise and NHS Staff Council. The line manager’s guide offers support in how to lead a flexible team, helping managers to put structures and processes in place to support and encourage a flexible workplace for all. The guide for individuals helps prepare staff for positive conversations to make requests about flexible working and can support the best chance of agreeing a solution that works for them, their teamand their organisation.

2. Webinar recordings and slides from Focus on Flex sessions designed to support colleagues in finding solutions to flexible working, such as Advertising, E-Rostering and flexible retirement.

– Flexible Working Webinar: Advertising with Flex

– Flexible Working Roundtable: Directors of Nursing and Midwifery and HR – case studies from across the Exemplar sites

– Flexible Working Roundtable: Ward and Rota Managers – E-Rostering

– Flexible Working for nurses, midwives and AHPs: Pensions and Flexible Retirement Recording and Slides

3. Flexible working definition and principles provides a shared understanding and aspirational set of principles for flexible working for all staff in the NHS. This complements the contractual changes to NHS Terms and Conditions in the Service Handbook.
