What’s in and what’s out for 2024?

It’s a new year, which means we’re naturally feeling the need to re-evaluate every aspect of our lives. Over the past few days across social media, viral posts and videos have been declaring which things should be both ‘in’ and ‘out’ for 2024.

When it comes to our careers and work lives, what behaviours should we be ushering in and more importantly, out – to support our wellbeing in 2024?

Below are a few suggestions for you…

In: having better boundaries

Practise the art of setting boundaries. Whether it’s establishing set hours to work or taking frequent breaks while working, clear and healthy boundaries can ultimately help to keep burnout away at work.

Out: meetings that could be phone calls

So many meetings aren’t necessary or aren’t designed in the best structure…now is the time to revisit these meetings.

How can they be structured to be a better use of time?

Could they be an email or if your inbox is bursting at the seams could the meeting be a phone call (you could even get some fresh air and some steps in whilst having that phone call!).

In: schedule Wellness Wednesday in your calendar

Wellness is what you make it, and this year it’s for you to schedule, organise and prioritise!

Block out some time to focus on your wellness…you could go on a lunchtime walk, read a book, have a mid-week lunch with colleagues and have a scroll through Wellbeing Wednesday!

Out: not asking for help when you need it

With mental health and loneliness on the rise, this year we need to get better at asking for help.

If you are struggling at work, you can:

  • Speak to your line manager
  • Have a conversation with your Health and Wellbeing Champion
  • Talk to your Mental Health First Aider
  • Have a chat with a colleague
  • Call the Vivup counselling line for free confidential support on 0800 023 9387

In: collaborating with colleagues

Expanding practice teams have brought the opportunity to introduce new skills and new insights into general practice.

Working across departments, with different roles and getting everyone’s unique insights and creativity focused on a task can mean you’re working with the best possible set of skills available.

Out: saying yes to everything

Make 2024 the year you start valuing your time more….

Too often, we say yes to every request and every demand, even when it’s not what we want.

In a world that applauds the grind, learning to say no will keep you grounded. Setting boundaries helps you care for yourself and when you care for yourself, you can look after others to the best of your ability.

In: in-person networking

Isolation is a growing problem and data from surveys carried out across general practice reflects this.

With many of us working in silo behind closed doors for the majority of the day, perhaps we could aim for fewer emails, replacing these with face-to-face coffees, lunches, walks, catch up’s over the kettle!

Are you having a Dry or Damp January?

Are you jumping head first into Dry January or consciously cutting down on your drinking?

Alcohol Change UK has developed an app to support you whether you are going alcohol free or moderating. With the app you’re able to track and set your own custom goals for Dry January, monitor your wellbeing, plus take on a dry month any time.

Putting your wellbeing first

Tonights webinar: How to embrace your limits, say no and deal with pushback

Join us at 7:30pm tonight to look at the fact that many professionals are experiencing overwhelming workloads, and that the pressure on our services is increasing.

We talk about how it’s just not possible to cram yet more into an already overscheduled day, and that the only answer is to prioritise what’s really important, set boundaries and say no.

At this online training you’ll learn you’ll learn:

  • How to get crystal clear on what you can control and what you can’t control
  • How to decide what’s really important so you can prioritise and say YES with purpose
  • A simple toolkit to help you deal with pushback and say NO

This will be a practical, helpful session focused on actions you can use at work straight away.  It’s designed specifically for healthcare staff so the tools are tailored to the pressure you’re working under in a stretched system.
