Equality, Diversity, Inclusion and Belonging (EDIB)

EDIB Updates

Every public sector healthcare provider has a duty to ensure that its policies do not lead to unlawful discrimination and promote equality of opportunity and good relations.

All GP practices offering NHS services in England and Wales are required to comply with the Public Sector Equality Duty (PSED).

The Equality and Human Rights Commission EHRC has published new advice to help embed equality considerations in the NHS services they provide.

This guidance contains more information on how GP practices can comply with the PSED.

Freedom to Speak Up

This is a reminder that you can raise any work-related issues or concerns in a private and confidential manner by emailing your Freedom to Speak Up Guardian at pcftsu.guardian@nhs.net.

You can choose to remain anonymous if you prefer. The goal is to support you during challenging times, help you voice concerns, and ensure the protection of both you and your colleagues. It also provides an opportunity to learn from these situations and share the lessons to prevent similar incidents in the future.

One common concern raised through our FTSUG inbox is microaggressions. These are everyday actions—whether intentional or unintentional—that convey hostile, derogatory, or negative messages towards an individual or group based on aspects of their identity, such as race, disability, gender, and more.

Microaggressions can be grouped into three main categories: Verbal, Behavioural, and Environmental. For more information on the definition and how to address these behaviours as an Active Bystander, please refer to the resources here.

Looking ahead, we’re excited to welcome you to more REACH Network events this year. Our next event will focus on celebrating the National Day of Staff Networks, with talks from Roger Kline and Mehwish Sharif to celebrate one year of the REACH Network.

New to Practice – Cohort 4

In April, we celebrated Cohort 4’s completion of their New to Practice Fellowship. This 2 year Post-CCT programme offers peer and lead support, PCN networking and engagement, education, mentoring and coaching.

Cohort 4 embraced the challenges and showed in their feedback that as a result of their fellowship, they felt less isolated in their role, felt more connected to the wider team/PCN and had increased confidence and understanding of the system.

Although the NHSE programme is not taking on any further fellows, The Training Hub can offer Post-CCT support in the form of the First 5 Network, Post-CCT forum,  PCIP and mentoring.

Middle(Twenty)5 – Welcome Sukhi!

As a GP with many years of clinical experience, a Clinical Director and Partner Member on the ICB, I’ve had the privilege of working through the challenges and opportunities that come with being in the middle of my career. I have seen first-hand the importance of workforce stability, the value of mentoring, and the powerful impact of leadership and innovation.

Becoming the Middle(Twenty)5 Ambassador is an opportunity to reflect on what is working, what needs improvement, and how we as GPs can thrive and advocate for general practice.

We would like to ask all our Middle(Twenty)5 GPs to help shape our events to ensure they are relevant, supportive and useful. Let us know which formats or topics you would find most valuable to connect and learn alongside your peers.

Please do complete this quick survey (just 1 minute!) to help us tailor future events to better suit your needs, interests, and availability.

Post-CCT Forum

Hosted by our Post-CCT Champion, Dr. Katie Benge and our First 5 (C&W) Ambassador Dr. Laura Doan, this forum aims to provide a space to discuss experiences, share tips, and ask questions.

Join us to learn about appraisals, education offers, mentoring, or any other post-CCT topics in Coventry and Warwickshire, including support for newly qualified GPs through our First 5 (C&W) GP network.

Forums will be held regularly. Please register for our events by clicking the links below.

General Practice Nursing News

Nursing Conference – 1st July – Save the Date!

Advanced Practice

Advanced Practice Review

Experienced nurses and midwives across the UK are increasingly taking on advanced practice roles. These are highly skilled, autonomous positions that bring significant benefits to patient care. These professionals use their expertise to provide timely, person-centred care, improve continuity across services, and help patients navigate complex healthcare systems. They also support transformation in service delivery, enhance safety, and contribute to workforce retention by offering clear career progression routes.

In response to growing calls for greater clarity and oversight, the NMC has undertaken a major review into advanced nursing and midwifery practice. Engagement with thousands of professionals and members of the public has highlighted the value of these roles, but also revealed inconsistencies in training, qualifications and governance. As a result, the NMC will now explore options for strengthening regulation of advanced practice to improve public safety and ensure standards across the sector.

Please contact your local ambassador – Sue Thomas at susan.thomas72@nhs.net if you would like to join in regular group peer support / clinical supervision sessions.
