Learning Outcomes:

  • Explain the physiology of diabetes and differences between Type 1 and 2 diabetes
  • Discuss the methods of diagnosing diabetes and providing information to those with newly diagnosed Type 2 diabetes
  • Explain the approaches that support achieving remission in Type 2 diabetes
  • Describe the basic advice provided around healthy diet, various dietary approaches and carbohydrate awareness
  • Discuss the modes of action of the most commonly used non-insulin medications
  • Name the major complications that may arise in people with a long duration of diabetes and measures that may limit or prevent them
  • Describe the key advice to patients about recognition and appropriate treatment of hypoglycaemia
  • Discuss the DVLA advice about driving and diabetes  
  • Explain the risks of acute hyperglycaemia and advice to patients on how to self-manage periods of illness
  • Provide examples of referral pathways to other services e.g. weight management, secondary care, podiatry, structured education, activity and psychological services etc
  • Describe the process of routine foot review and factors that lead to diabetic foot risk status 
  • Discuss local recommendations for appropriate use of blood glucose and ketone monitoring
  • Explain the key components and process of an annual diabetes review and a self-management plan
