Equality, Diversity, Inclusion and Belonging

Our vision is to support a workforce that is thriving in a culture that respects, values, and celebrates differences and how this enriches the workplace and improves their patients’ care.

Why does Equality, Diversity, Inclusion and Belonging (EDIB) matter to us?

Morally as a Training Hub we need to lead by example.

At Coventry and Warwickshire Training Hub, we are a proactive and passionate team who are committed to supporting our general practice workforce to reach their full potential, build rewarding careers and deliver high-quality healthcare for our patients.

We recognise the importance of valuing diversity and inclusion in the workplace and understand the benefits that can be achieved through building an inclusive and representative workforce in Coventry and Warwickshire practices and supporting organisations including the Primary Care Networks and Place-based general practice provider organisations.

The evidence is clear that building a healthcare workforce that is representative of the population has benefits for patients and service users in terms of experience, safety and outcomes.

We have a crucial role to play, within Coventry and Warwickshire General Practice and the wider Integrated Care System, in supporting education, training and career development that creates opportunity for people in every setting and from every background. We will use our influence with stakeholders to further equality, diversity and inclusion in the wider healthcare system and within medical and clinical education.

Our Vision

To support a workforce that is thriving in a culture that respects, values, and celebrates differences and how this enriches the workplace and improves their patients’ care.

Freedom to Speak Up Guardian – For Primary Care Providers

We acknowledge the difficulty some staff have to speak up, particularly staff from vulnerable, marginalised, and minority backgrounds. The Coventry and Warwickshire Integrated Care Board has developed a Freedom to Speak Up (FTSU) policy for General Practice to help you speak up.

We encourage you to review this FTSU policy below for guidance on what you can speak up about, who you can speak to and what happens when.

Most speaking up happens through conversations with supervisors and line managers where challenges are raised and resolved quickly. We strive for a culture where that is normal, everyday practice and encourage you to explore this option – it may well be the easiest and simplest way of resolving matters.

If you need to raise a concern, please contact your Freedom to Speak Up service, provided by the Primary Care team of NHS Coventry and Warwickshire ICB. They can be contacted via cwicb.pcftsu@nhs.net

By addressing areas of concern, inequalities and barriers faced within the workplace

The first step in our Equality Diversity, Inclusion and Belonging (EDIB) strategy is to evaluate – to learn about our workforce, identifying areas of concern, racial inequalities and barriers.

The data from the survey will help us to do that –  to understand the challenges faced by our workforce and enable us to put support in place; improving the experience of staff in general practice impacting

235 members of staff across General Practice completed the survey, key headlines from the survey across C&W can be viewed below.

By educating the workforce on EDIB related issues and learning from staff with lived experiences

Staff Networks

A staff network is a safe space to discuss and learn from those in underrepresented groups and who have experienced inequality and discrimination. These discussions and learnings will enable us to put support in place; improving the experience of staff in General Practice and impacting patient care.

The network is open to anyone and everyone and any personal discussions had during meetings aren’t shared elsewhere without explicit permission from all of those who are mentioned or involved.

The first half of the network is typically education based and is recorded and the second half is a confidential discussion.

Active Bystander Training session

As part of our Equality, Diversity, Inclusion and Belonging work we are prioritising breaking down barriers when it comes to speaking up – not only to support you to speak up for yourself but being able to do so when you witness unprofessional behaviour in your workplace.

50% of staff working in and supporting General Practice in C&W who witnessed unprofessional behaviour (racism, discrimination etc.) in their workplace did not report it…

Kay Mohanna leads this training session. giving you the tools you need to be able to recognise and respond to micro-aggressions in the workplace.

It was great to see so many of you on the training session! If you couldn’t join us live, then grab a cuppa and a sofa and watch or listen to the training by clicking on the video to your right.
