Prior to undertaking foundation training in immunisation, it is essential that the HCSW/TNA, their employer, and supervisor understand the commitment and support required in terms of time, supervision, competency, and assessment of the high level of knowledge and skills required in the delivery of the immunisation programme.
Assessment of knowledge will take place over the 2 study days. You will be required to complete a multiple choice test at the end of the second day – you will be given 1 hour to complete this. You must achieve a pass rate of 80% to complete the course. If you do not achieve this, you will be given a further chance to complete the test on a date and time to be specified.
After completion of the 2-day theoretical training and knowledge assessment the practitioner can go on to the practical application of training with supervision and competencies.
Before starting to give immunisations, all new immunisers should spend time with an experienced registered practitioner who has undertaken training that meets the national minimum standards and is experienced in advising about immunisation and giving vaccines.
It is recommended that only HCSWs/TNAs who have achieved education and training to Level Three of the Qualifications and Credit Framework (QCF) 4 or equivalent in England and Wales with at least 2 years’ experience as a Healthcare support worker should be considered for training in vaccine administration. HCSWs working at this level are likely to be at Level 3 or above of the NHS Careers Framework.
